Mechelle Lewis, Ph.D., is a program officer in the Division of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biological Chemistry, where she administers research grants in the areas of G protein-coupled receptors and other cell surface receptors for drugs, endogenous ligands, and other stimuli. She also manages individual postdoctoral awards and career development awards in physiology and pharmacology.
Prior to joining NIGMS, Lewis was an associate professor in the departments of neurology and pharmacology at Pennsylvania State University’s College of Medicine, where she did translational research related to movement disorders and environmental exposures. In addition, she was a master facilitator of problem-based learning.
Lewis received a B.A. degree in psychology from Creighton University and an M.S. from Emporia State University. She earned her Ph.D. in neurobiology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, characterizing the regulation of D1-like dopamine receptors by agonists. She also completed postdoctoral work in molecular biology and in structural and functional MRI imaging of human subjects.
