Biographical Sketch: Hongwei Gao, M.D., Ph.D.

Hongwei Gao, M.D., Ph.D., is a program director in the Division for Research Capacity Building, where he oversees the Institutional Development Award Networks for Clinical and Translational Research (IDeA-CTR) program and manages grants for the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE​) program.

Gao came to NIGMS from Harvard Medical School, where he was an assistant professor of anesthesia and a senior scientist in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Gao earned his Ph.D. in microbiology and molecular genetics at Michigan State University. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the department of pathology at the University of Michigan.​
