NIGMS has four standing study sections that manage the review of all application to NIGMS’ institutional training NOFOs. Reviewers on the panels are appointed for 2- to 6-year terms and meet three times a year to review applications.
The TWD-A and TWD-B study sections routinely review basic biomedical and medical sciences predoctoral T32 programs. While there is considerable overlap in expertise between the two panels, applications are typically divided to accommodate conflicts and to balance workload. Ad hoc reviewers may be added to the panels to bolster expertise and in cases of larger-then-usual numbers of applications, predoctoral T32 programs may be split among TWD-C and D panels. Post-doctoral T32 programs are reviewed by a separate special emphasis panel (SEP) in the Branch.

The TWD-C and TWD-D study sections manage the review of applications for a broader range of training programs: Bridges to the Baccalaureate (T34), U-RISE (T34), MARC (T34), PREP (R25), Bridges to the Doctorate (T32), G-RISE (T32), IMSD (T32), and IRACDA (K12) as well as predoctoral T32 programs, if necessary. Again, applications are typically divided between the two panels to accommodate conflicts and to balance workload.
