NIGMS supports basic research that increases understanding of biological processes and lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Most applications to NIGMS are not in response to a specific solicitation, but the Institute does fund research in several special areas, a selection of which appear below. For more information, see the complete list of all NIGMS research funding opportunities, programs and grant mechanisms.
Clinical Research Areas Clinical research within the mission of the PPBC Division at NIGMS.
BioMath ProgramAn interagency NSF/NIGMS program designed to bring mathematics and statistics into the core of biological and biomedical research and to broaden the use of innovative mathematics for understanding life processes.
Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS)A collaboration of scientists who develop and use computational, statistical and mathematical models to improve the understanding of emerging infectious disease dynamics. The MIDAS Coordination Center plays a key role in organizing and facilitating infectious disease modeling research. The Center provides data services to the network, including metadata design and creation, data standardization, and a data discovery and access portal. It also coordinates communication between researchers, students, and public health practitioners.
A Science of Science Approach to Analyzing and Innovating the Biomedical Research Enterprise (SoS:BIO) An interagency program to provide scientific analysis of important aspects of the biomedical research enterprise and efforts to foster a diverse, innovative, productive and efficient scientific workforce from which future research discoveries and scientific leaders will emerge.
Stem Cell Initiatives Initiatives to encourage and facilitate basic research on pluripotent stem cells, such as human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells, including their use as model systems.
Systems Biology Centers focused on systems-level studies of biomedical phenomena.
AIDS-Related Structural Biology Program Research focused on the basic structural, biophysical and cell biological investigation of HIV and its interaction with the host cell. The program was transferred from NIGMS to the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in 2019. More information can be found on NIAID's Centers for HIV Structural Biology page.
Large-Scale Collaborative Project Awards (Glue Grant) Program Consortia that brought together large, interdisciplinary teams of researchers to solve complex problems in biomedical science.
Protein Structure Initiative An effort to apply high-throughput structure determination methods to study a broad range of important biological and biomedical problems.
Supplements for Collaborative Science Administrative supplements that enabled NIGMS grantees to form new collaborations to support the goals of funded grants.
