Biographical Sketch: Rochelle M. Long, Ph.D.

Rochelle M. Long, Ph.D., is director of the NIGMS Division of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biological Chemistry. The division funds a broad range of research from basic studies in synthetic chemistry, enzymology, biotechnology, and chemical biology, to fundamental studies in receptor pharmacology, metabolism/transport, and cellular signaling, to clinical areas that include anesthesia, sepsis, critical illness, injury, and wound healing. She represents NIGMS on a wide range of topics and institute priorities, including research funding programs for individuals and teams; clinician-scientist workforce training; technology development; and diversity, equity, and inclusion. She is particularly interested in collaborative research efforts between scientific disciplines and medical fields.

Long is a pharmacologist with a background in drug metabolism, who has managed research grants and projects at NIGMS since 1990. Her major achievements include establishing and overseeing the trans-NIH Pharmacogenomics Research Network and catalyzing additional partnerships such as the Global Alliance for Pharmacogenomics and the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium.

Previously, she served on the faculty in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the School of Pharmacy, University of Maryland, Baltimore. Prior to that she was a Pharmacology Research Associate (PRAT) fellow in the Laboratory of Chemical Pharmacology at the NHLBI.

Long received a B.S. in chemistry from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in pharmacology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. She also was employed by the Chemistry Industry Institute of Toxicology in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
