Federico Bernal, Ph.D., is the chief of the Research Advancement Programs Branch and a program director in the Division for Research Capacity Building. He oversees the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) and Support for Research Excellence (SuRE) programs.

Prior to joining NIGMS, Bernal was a principal investigator and section head in the intramural program of the National Cancer Institute. 

Bernal received B.S. degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute. Bernal then conducted postdoctoral research in chemical biology at Harvard University and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
