Mercedes Rubio, Ph.D., is director of the Division for Research Capacity Building (DRCB).
Rubio previously served as chief of the Predoctoral Basic Biomedical and Medical Scientist Training Programs in the Division of Training and Workforce Development (TWD). In this role, she oversaw the Institute’s Predoctoral Basic Biomedical and Medical Scientist Training Programs. She managed predoctoral institutional research training grants in Biobehavioral Interface (T32), Leading Equity and Diversity in the Medical Scientist Training Program (LEAD MSTP), scientific conference grants (R13), and grants in the Research on Interventions portfolio. As part of the NIH Diversity Program Consortium, she managed the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN).
Before joining NIGMS, Rubio was section chief of the Education and Training Section in the Division of Clinical Innovations at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences. She managed several Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program grants. She oversaw CTSA consortium wide clinical and translational science workforce efforts, that included an assessment of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility footprint. Rubio also previously managed grant portfolios at NIGMS and the National Institute of Mental Health, supporting research education, career development, and training. She provided support to the NIH Advisory Committee to the Director Working Group on the Physician-Scientist Workforce Working Group Report.
Rubio completed her postdoctoral training in Nursing and her Ph.D. in medical sociology at the University of Michigan. She received her B.A. in sociology from California State University, Bakersfield.
