NRSA Individual Predoctoral MD/PhD or Other Dual-Doctoral Degree Fellowships for Students at Institutions Without NIH-Funded Institutional Predoctoral Dual-Degree Training Programs (F30)

NIGMS accepts applications from students matriculated in a combined M.D.-Ph.D. or other dual-degree training programs (such as D.O.-Ph.D., D.D.S.-Ph.D. and D.V.M.-Ph.D.) at institutions that are not currently supported by the NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Program or Leading Equity and Diversity in the Medical Scientist Training Program.

NIGMS supports advanced predoctoral research fellows in fundamental biomedical science areas that are relevant to the NIGMS mission. Applicants for F30 fellowships must have matriculated into a dual-degree program no more than 48 months prior to the due date of the initial application. Typically, at the time of application students are expected to be in their third or fourth year of dual-degree training and to have progressed to Ph.D. candidacy by the time of award. Applicants must also have identified a research sponsor and a dissertation project that must be in basic biomedical sciences relevant to the NIGMS mission, and includes a promising approach to the problem as well as strong training potential. The proposed mentored research training is expected to clearly enhance the individual’s potential to develop into a productive, independent physician-scientist or other clinician-scientist.

NIGMS will not provide funding to applicants beyond the 8th year in a dual-?degree program and will hold strictly to the requirement that at least 50 percent of the funding support research leading to the research doctorate.

Because of the strong commitment to supporting predoctoral students through institutional training grants, NIGMS expects funding for this F30 fellowship to be highly competitive, and anticipates funding only a very limited number of applications in any year.
