Biographical Sketch: Federico Bernal, Ph.D.

Federico Bernal, Ph.D., is a program director in the Division for Research Capacity Building. Bernal oversees the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) co-funding program and manages grants for the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE), the IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE), and the Support of Competitive Research (SCORE) programs. Dr. Bernal also serves as the Project Coordinator for the STTR Hubs​ for IDeA states. 

Prior to joining NIGMS, Bernal was a principal investigator and section head in the intramural program of the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Md. Bernal received B.S. degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. Bernal then conducted postdoctoral research in chemical biology at Harvard University and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
