Biographical Sketch: Federico Bernal, Ph.D.

Federico Bernal, Ph.D., is a program director in the Division for Research Capacity Building, where he manages the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) co-funding program as well as the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) and Regional Technology Transfer Accelerator Hubs for IDeA states. Additionally, he handles grants from the Support of Competitive Research (SCORE) program. Prior to joining NIGMS, Bernal was a principal investigator and section head in the Laboratory of Protein Dynamics and Signaling in the intramural program of the National Cancer Institute.

Bernal received B.S. degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. He conducted postdoctoral research in chemical biology at Harvard University and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
