We would like to remind the training community about and encourage applications to the Trans-Departmental Basic Biomedical Sciences (TBB) predoctoral training program. TBB is one of 12 basic biomedical sciences areas NIGMS supports through PAR-23-228. The goals are to broaden the scope and the institutional and geographic distribution of NIGMS basic biomedical research training programs, as well as to enhance research training capacity. In contrast to other programs focused on specific scientific areas, the TBB program provides students with research training opportunities from the breadth of biomedical disciplines at participating organizations.

We’re hosting a virtual question-and-answer “office hour” on Monday, January 13, 2025, for our basic biomedical and medical scientist T32 programs:

• NIGMS Predoctoral Basic Biomedical Sciences Research Training Program (PAR-23-228). Next application due date: January 25, 2025.
• Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) (PAR-24-128). Next application due date: January 25, 2025.
• Leading Equity and Diversity in the Medical Scientist Training Program (LEAD MSTP) (PAR-23-030). Next application due date: January 27, 2025.

We’re hosting a virtual question-and-answer “office hour” on Monday, December 16, for the Graduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (G-RISE; PAR-24-032) and Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD; PAR-24-031) T32 training programs.

The goals of these programs are to strengthen research training environments and promote broader participation of scientists earning Ph.D. degrees in the biomedical research workforce.

We've published the funding announcements for our new Tribal Undergraduate to Graduate Research Training and Leadership Experiences (TURTLE) program. TURTLE will support federally recognized American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) Tribes, Tribal Colleges or Universities, Tribal health programs, or Tribal organizations (collectively termed, eligible Tribal entities) to identify and develop a pool of scientists to conduct research on AI/AN health and health disparities.

We’re pleased to share that the Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs) have been reissued. MOSAIC, an NIH-wide initiative that NIGMS oversees, has two components: a postdoctoral career transition award (K99/R00) and a cohort-based mentoring and career development program that supports the scholars (UE5 research education cooperative agreement).

We’re pleased to announce that the notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) for the Bridges to the Doctorate (B2D) program has been reissued (PAR-24-232). This NOFO aims to promote broad participation in the biomedical research workforce by strengthening research training environments and expanding the pool of well-trained master’s students who transition into and complete biomedical Ph.D.s. NIGMS expects organizations to engage in outreach and recruitment activities to encourage individuals from underrepresented groups to participate in this program.

We’re pleased to announce a virtual “office hour” on Thursday, August 1, for the Bridges to the Baccalaureate (B2B) Research Training Program (PAR-22-125).

B2B develops a diverse pool of research-oriented undergraduates who transition from associate to baccalaureate degree-granting institutions and complete a baccalaureate STEM degree, positioning them to pursue research-oriented biomedical higher degree programs or enter careers in the biomedical research workforce.

As graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, you may find yourself searching for opportunities to support the current or next stage of your research training. NIGMS has a long history of fostering research training and developing a strong biomedical research workforce through a variety of programs at all education levels. Many of our research training grants are made to organizations, which in turn select the students or postdoctoral researchers who’ll receive support. This post focuses on programs individual graduate students and postdoctoral scientists can directly apply to, regardless of your institutional or organizational affiliation.  

We’re pleased to announce that the notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs) for the Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (U-RISE) (PAR-24-137) and Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) (PAR-24-138) programs have been reissued. These NOFOs aim to promote broad participation in the biomedical research workforce by strengthening research training environments and expanding the pool of well-trained students who:

• Complete their baccalaureate degree, and
• Transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs (such as a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.).
