The Judith H. Greenberg Early Career Investigator (ECI) Lecture series highlights the achievements of NIGMS’ early career grantees. The annual series, established in 2016 and originally called the NIGMS Director’s ECI Lecture series, was designed to encourage undergraduate students to pursue careers in biomedical research. The scope of these lectures has since broadened to include graduate through postdoctoral-level students and other early career scientists. Each lecture is presented by an NIGMS-funded early career researcher working on the cutting edge of science. Speakers give a 30-minute talk about their research. Afterward, they interact with the audience in a 30-minute question-and-answer session, addressing career-focused and research-related questions. The lectures are livestreamed and recorded. Find recordings of past presentations on each of the individual speaker pages.
In 2021, the lecture series was renamed to honor NIGMS’ former Deputy Director Dr. Judith H. Greenberg, who retired in 2020 after 45 years of service to NIH, most of which was spent at NIGMS. Dr. Greenberg held a strong interest in bioethics issues and in research training and career development, and advised NIH on topics that included human embryonic stem cells, gene therapy, and biomedical career advancement for women. She was especially committed to helping the advancement of early career scientists. NIGMS renamed this lecture to recognize her numerous contributions to NIGMS and NIH.
