Training Grant Forms and Instructions

New and Competing Applications

All applications for institutional training grants (T32) must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov. Applications in the 12 areas of basic biomedical sciences supported by NIGMS must use PAR-23-228; applications for the Leading Equity and Diversity in the Medical Scientist Training Program (LEAD MSTP) must use PAR-23-030; applications for the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) must use PAR-24-128; and the clinical postdoctoral programs must use the NIH T32 Parent Program Announcement PA-25-168 (January 25 due date only). Applications using the wrong notice of funding opportunity will be returned without review.

All NIGMS T32 non-competing progress reports are due on November 15, and grantees are required to use the Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR) module for submission. Grantees should follow the guidelines suggested in the NIH RPPR Instruction Guide [PDF, 2.1MB], including submitting a trainee diversity report and NRSA Table 8A.

Statement of Appointment and Trainee Termination

NIH requires the use of the eRA Commons xTrain system to electronically prepare and submit PHS 2271 Statement of Appointment forms and/or PHS 416-7 Termination Notices when required for institutional research training and career development awards, individual fellowships and research education awards. Paper appointment forms and termination notices will not be accepted. Paper submissions will be considered noncompliant, and grantees will be required to resubmit appointment forms and termination notices electronically using xTrain. Potential users of xTrain are encouraged to review the training resources and instructions for using the system available on the eRA Web page for Institutional Research Training and Career Development Awards. For new users who would like to try out the xTrain system and learn about its features in a sample environment, xTrain is also available on the eRA Commons site.
