We’re pleased to announce the availability of administrative supplements to Institutional Development Award (IDeA) U54, P20, and P30 grants for team science projects (NOT-GM-24-001). The supplements are intended for projects that bring together two to four investigators from IDeA states with different scientific expertise to address complex basic, behavioral, clinical, and/or translational research questions through complementary approaches. The questions shouldn’t duplicate those that researchers are currently pursuing through the parent awards and should clearly benefit from the collective efforts of the collaboration.

We’re pleased to share the notice of funding opportunity for the Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH) Planning Grants (PAR-24-041). This program supports Tribal entities, including federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native Tribes, Tribal colleges and universities, Tribal health programs, and Tribal organizations, to plan and conduct preparatory work for developing competitive NARCH S06 applications. The NARCH Planning Grant awards aim at expanding the reach of the NARCH S06 program, which supports health-related research, research career enhancement, and research infrastructure enhancement.

We’re pleased to announce that the notices of funding opportunities (NOFOs) for the Graduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement (G-RISE; PAR-24-032) and Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD; PAR-24-031) programs have been reissued. These NOFOs aim to strengthen research training environments and promote broader participation in the biomedical research workforce by expanding the pool of well-trained scientists earning a Ph.D., for example, encouraging the inclusion of individuals from underrepresented groups (see Notice of NIH's Interest in Diversity).

DRCB seeks to enhance the research, research training, research infrastructure, and faculty development of institutions in states and jurisdictions that have historically received low levels of NIH support. DRCB is thus responsible for both broadening the distribution of NIH biomedical research funding and supporting NIGMS' commitment to developing a diverse biomedical research workforce. DRCB manages a number of highly impactful initiatives, including the Institutional Development Awards (IDeA), Native American Research Centers for Health (NARCH), Support for Research Excellence (SuRE), and Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) programs.

Now that you understand the major types of research project grants NIGMS supports and where to apply, let’s discuss our Institute’s funding opportunities that focus on research capacity building.

What Is Research Capacity Building?

Part of NIH’s mission is to increase the participation and representation of researchers at institutions that don’t receive large amounts of NIH funding. This includes institutions that have partnerships with Tribal organizations and that educate students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research, and those in states and jurisdictions that traditionally have low levels of NIH funding.
